On behalf of my wife Donelle and myself, I would like to wish you and all of your loved ones a very merry Christmas and a very happy new year! Let us all remember the reason why we celebrate Christmas which is the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his life and sacrifice and perfect example of love and charitable service to his fellow men. Let us all pray that next year will prove a year of positive conservative change for New Mexico and the United States of America.
You know, its sad, but my three daughters attending a Bernalillo County public school are not even allowed to wish their friends a merry Christmas anymore. Christmas parties and nativity scenes have been banned from our schools for friends of offending the less than 30% of our citizens who are of a different faith many of whom have no religion whatsoever even though Christmas has long been a national holiday celebrated by people of all religious faiths and people of no particular faith. Our children are not even allowed to draw pictures of the nativity scene or religious symbols. If you elect me as your next State Senator, I promise to fight to restore a greater degree of religious freedom to our public schools for people of all faiths including our Christian majority. I also pledge to fight to increase choice so that children of low and middle income families in this state can attend private schools in order to improve the quality of their education and prospects of their success.
This past week, I heard in the news that our public schools are abandoning abstinence only education because a study showed that “it doesn’t work.” It seems that they are going back to teaching a form of sex education which teaches that the only consequences to sexual promiscuity are sexually-transmitted diseases and pregnancy which can only be avoided by birth control rather than abstinence despite the harmful emotional and other effects of teenage sexual activity, pregnancy, teenage childbirth, abortion, etc. Yet alternative lifestyles which are objectionable to most of the parents of our school districts are taught to all of our children forcing them to be indoctrinated with non-traditional “values” in opposition to those held by their parents. Other parents who object feel compelled to take them out of the public school system altogether and spend time and money they cannot afford to expend on private schools and home schooling their kids.
Unfortunately, the truth is that our schools have become value-free zones where morality is not taught but eschewed. Is there any wonder that violent crime, drug use and teenage sexual activity is continuing to increase along with our high school drop out rate. If you elect me to serve you in the State Senate, I will fight to restore moral values to our schools and abstinence-only education.
Finally, under the “No Child Left Behind” federal legislation, most of our schools have been classified as failed schools because an insufficient percentage of our students are passing mandatory test. My children attend one of those “failed public schools.” I believe it is wrong to classify a school as failed and thus stigmatize every student who attends it. If you elect me next year I promise to fight to work with our congressional dedication to get them to amend or repeal the No Child Left Behind bill to allow states to exempt themselves from part or all of it without losing federal grant money.
Best regards,
David Pyne
